Robert C. McGillen


  Bob McGillen graduated from Trent University in 1969, which was the third graduating class in the university’s history. Bob then graduated from University of Western Ontario Law School in 1972 and was called to the Bar in 1974. Bob has practiced his entire career in the City of Peterborough.

Bob’s primary practice focuses on commercial and residential real estate transactions. Bob also assists clients with preparing their Last Will and Testament and Powers of Attorney, estate administration and estate planning, corporate and business law and civil litigation. Bob has appeared as a guest lecturer at several Ontario Bar Association seminars, covering topics involving rural and urban real estate transactions, land use planning and related issues.

Bob’s clients include business owners, real estate developers, home builders, real estate investors, financial institutions and individuals.

Bob has been active in his community and has taken distinct pleasure in assisting not-for-profit organizations:

  • Separate School Board Trustee (1975-1977)
  • Member of Big Brothers Association (1977-1984)
  • Member and Past President of Peterborough Sales and Advertising Association (1989)
  • Member and Past President of Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce (2003)
  • Served on multiple Boards including Canadian Mental Health Association and other not-for-profit Boards and charitable organizations
  • Counsel to Peterborough and District Sports Hall of Fame and Kids in Need (K.I.N.) Inc. and other not-for-profit and charitable organizations
  • Bob is one of the “Three Loonies”, which has raised over $600,000 for Kawartha Food Share

C.Ian Keay


Ian Keay is a lawyer with the law offices of McGillen Keay, which firm was formed in 2010. Ian graduated from Trent University on the Dean’s List in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts. From there, Ian attended the University of Western Ontario and graduated from law school in 2002 after winning the Shibley Righton award. Ian practiced law in Toronto, ON from 2003-2005 and then returned to his hometown of Peterborough, ON to continue to practice law.

Ian is able to assist his clients with various legal issues. A main focus of the practice centres on real estate matters: residential/commercial/cottage real estate transactions, mortgages and re-financing work, title transfers, boundary disputes, “made land” disputes with the Trent Severn Waterway and right-of-way issues. Ian is able to provide comprehensive advice relating to contracts and contract drafting including employment agreements, shareholders agreements and the full range of family law agreements, including separation agreements, co-habitation agreements and marriage contracts. Ian has assisted his clients on land use planning issues, including the preparation of Consent/Severance applications, re-zonings and minor variances. Owner-operated businesses and franchisees can get assistance with corporate law issues, including incorporations, maintaining and updating corporate minute books, drafting shareholder agreements and with shareholder disputes. Ian has acted on many commercial transactions including share and asset sales and purchases. Oliver Cooper


Oliver Cooper joins McGillen Keay effective the fall of 2011. Oliver graduated from Trent University on the Dean’s List in 2005. Oliver attended law school at the University of Alberta earning his Bachelor of Laws degree in 2010. Oliver’s legal education focussed on the areas of advocacy and negotiation.

During his time at the University of Alberta, Oliver was extensively involved with Student Legal Services, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal assistance to the low-income community in Greater Edmonton. Oliver volunteered and was later hired by Student Legal Services and was personally responsible for and supervised hundreds of criminal law cases as well as the volunteers. Oliver continued his volunteer work with Student Legal Services while working with a boutique litigation law firm during his final year of law school. Oliver subsequently articled with that same firm. His practice focused on courtroom litigation, both civil and criminal. Oliver has successfully represented his clients before Administrative tribunals, Provincial Court and Superior Court.

Oliver has successfully defended his clients in all areas of criminal law including, assault, drug offences, impaired driving, theft, fraud, youth offences and serious traffic violations. Oliver can help you navigate through the complex and often overwhelming area of Family law. Oliver has represented clients in all areas of civil litigation including personal injury, commercial disputes, and all small claims court actions.

Ashley Winslow, Real Estate Law Clerk


Ashley Winslow has worked with Bob McGillen since 1997. Ashley’s primary responsibility is the firm’s Real Estate work: preparing documents for purchase transactions, sale transactions, mortgages, refinancing etc. Ashley also has experience assisting on Family Law files, including drafting marriage contracts, co-habitation agreements, separation agreements, completing applications for divorce and all other domestic issues.





Kathleen Gillam, Real Estate Law Clerk


Kathleen has worked as a law clerk since 1987. Kathleen is the senior real estate clerk at McGillen Keay. Kathleen is accomplished at all matters relating to residential, commercial and cottage properties.





Pat Graham, Corporate & Estates Law Clerk


Pat Graham has worked as a law clerk since 1979. Pat is the senior corporate and estates law clerk and has considerable experience in both areas of law. Pat has prepared Wills and Powers of Attorney, assisted executors with the administration of Estates, maintained corporate minute books, prepared Shareholder Agreements, prepared and organized incorporations, assisted on commercial transactions with respect to asset and share purchases and sales and all other related matters.





Marg Regts, Bookkeeper


Marg Regts has been a bookkeeper since 1967 and has worked for Robert McGillen since 1997. Marg is trained in the PC Law accounting software program which is recognized by the Law Society as the program mostly widely used by Ontario lawyers.





Kathy Smith, Litigation Clerk


Kathy has worked as a law clerk since 1995 in the areas of litigation and family law. She joined the firm in April 2010. Kathy has considerable experience drafting court documents for civil litigation matters. Her expertise in family law includes drafting court applications for custody/ access or divorce, assisting with drafting marriage contracts, co-habitation agreements, and separation agreements.
